More than 2,300 volunteers took part in the National Nature Park Day initiative by the global environmental organization WWF and GLOBUL on May 23 and collected over 15 tons of waste at Bulgaria’s 11 nature parks.

The volunteers collected garbage and renovated the visitor infrastructure at some of the country’s most popular tourist and recreation areas inBulgaria. As expected, Vitosha Nature park attracted the highest number of volunteers, some 500. WWF Bulgaria, GLOBUL and park authorities had provided all the necessary equipment, garbage bags and gloves for the volunteers. The most active participants won prizes from GLOBUL and WWF.

GLOBUL provided financial and logistic support to the WWF initiative within the framework of its GLOBUL Green long-term sustainable development strategy. About 100 GLOBUL and Germanos employees joined the project.

Bulgarian showbiz and sport stars, media personalities and foreign diplomats supported the National Nature Parks Day initiative and also took part in various parks. International tennis star Magi Maleeva, rally driver Krum Donchev, Music Idol winner Toma, TV and radio host Niki Kunchev, British Ambassador to Bulgaria Mr. Steve Williams bTV news anchor Venelin Petkov, RE:TV journalist Ivan Bedrov, actor Philip Avramov, pop stars Vanya Shtereva and Viki of the Mastilo band, the head of the Consular Service of the Embassy of Germany Wolfgang Wendel, bTV weather reporters Stanislava Traikova and Hristina Baliiska and photographer Alexanader Ivanov, of 360° Bulgaria fame, were ‘ambassadors’ of the parks.

This was the second edition of the National Nature Parks Day initiative by WWF, the first one was held in 2007. Besides cleaning and renovation of the parks, the project aims to promote responsible behavior and protection of the Bulgarian nature.

The strategy includes a set of measures and initiatives, aiming to minimise the company’s footprint on the environment, promote reuse and recycling, raise public awareness and support public environmental projects. GLOBUL is the first telecommunications operator to develop and launch such initiative in Bulgaria. More information on GLOBUL Green programs and activities is available at www.globulgreen.bg.
