GLOBUL Chief Executive Officer Mr. Haris Kotsibos and Corporate Marketing Director Mrs. Petya Stoyanova presented at a press conference today the operator’s environment protection strategy GLOBUL Green in which the company will invest BGN 400,000.GLOBUL is the first Bulgarian telecommunications company to roll out a long-term set of measures and initiatives aimed at minimization of its footprint on the environment, promotion of reuse and recycling and in support of public environment protection projects.
GLOBUL and the official project partners GERMANOS will promote reuse and recycling of mobile handsets and accessories among Bulgarian mobile users. Special collection bins will be put in some 300 GLOBUL and GERMANOS shops across the country where clients may put their old and obsolete handsets, used phone batteries, hands-free kits, phone chargers, data cables and headphones.
GLOBUL, assisted by GERMANOS will organize the collection and the recycling of the collected items. The two companies expect collection of 5 kg of mobile waste per collection point per year.
“It would be best if any mobile handset was used as long as possible but if a mobile phone is broken beyond repair or obsolete it should be disposed of in a responsible way and not thrown in the bin with the other garbage. Mobile phones contain materials that decompose slowly in nature and which are potentially harmful to the environment. Our goal is to prevent that.” - Mrs. Stoyanova told the press conference.
Under its GLOBUL Green strategy, the operator will also implement series of measures and initiatives aimed at reducing its energy, water and other resources consumption, energy efficiency improvement, reuse and recycling of materials and equipment.
GLOBUL has already implemented several projects for reuse and recycling of resources and equipment. Paper and printer toner cartridges in GLOBUL offices and shops are being reused and then recycled. All GLOBUL products come to the market in recyclable packages and are being sold in bags of degralen - an environmentally-friendly material that dissolves for 24 months in the nature or 100 times faster than the ordinary PVC bags. Working IT equipment that is no longer needed in the company, GLOBUL donates to schools and universities.
“We realize that like any individual or a family, GLOBUL operations inevitably leave their footprint on the environment. Today we present our GLOBUL Green strategy which aims to reduce this footprint in a responsible and advanced way. We also intend to require such responsible behavior from our partners, suppliers and subcontractors.” - Mr. Kotsibos said.
Within the GLOBUL Green strategy framework GLOBUL has reached an agreement with the Bulgarian branch of the international environmentalist organization WWF to support the 2009 edition of the WWF Natural Parks National Day campaign in which hundreds of volunteers collect garbage and restore recreation areas in the most beautiful and most popular natural parks in Bulgaria.
“This is only the beginning of GLOBUL Green. We know that the environment will not be preserved by implementing a few campaigns and we plan to add more initiatives and more measures to our strategy. We believe that all of our 4 million clients will support us so we all can have a better future in a better world.” - commented Mr. Kotsibos.
